Dinosaur Legs

Click on the pictures for a closer look.
I'm working on a dipping diplodocus. I've made the legs from tubes of card. The head drop drops down and the neck needs to fit into a cut-out at the top of the legs but working out where to put the cut out on the flat pieces is difficult. Often in this situation I will make the cut outs then unfold the piece and measure up.

In this model there were various measurements that needed that needed to be made. So I used a different technique. The wonder of card models is that they can be printed on. I printed a rule line at the top of the leg parts then assembled them. It was now easy to see where cut-outs and glue areas were needed and I could transfer these to the computer.
Neat eh!?

Here you can see the finished leg parts with the cut out. It is now easy for me to refer to the printed rule and transfer these dimensions to the template on the computer.

Higham Hall

I've had a fun time running a short session at Higham Hall in the heart of the lake district. What was supposed to be a short talk about what I do ran on a bit. (I can balther on if people look even slightly interested) We only had a short time to make models. We had a go at the Paper Moose and the Paper Elephant models. Most people finished their models then we adjourned to the dining room for a lavish supper. Very nice. Thanks to every one who came - I had a great time - I hope you did too.

Matt Shlian

Matt Shlian has a fine collection of paper based work on his website. Follow the 'Video' link to see an elegant collapsable arch among other things. The 'Sculpture' section is just as intriguing. From intricate geometrical shapes to pop up book pages. Matt show as fine eye and a quality and precision in his work.
Nice!

Ig

And so to Newcastle to speak at the Ig Noble UK tour. Once at the Centre for Life we the speakers were delivered to the green room for refreshments and thence to the Centre for Life Science Wall of Fame where we were asked to sign our names.
The wall read like a who's who of international science - and me. I managed to squeezed my signature in between Bill Bryon and Richard Dawkins.
Thanks to all the people who came to the event. And thanks of course to Marc Abrahams for inviting me.

Paper Animation

This intriguing paper animation is by Javan Ivey. His website shows how it was done. Clever stuff. Must have taken ages!
